Trying to work out whether your furniture will fit in one Luton van is difficult when every item is a different size, some furniture can be dismantled and boxes can be stacked into gaps. OnRoad Removals created a free interactive tool to make that planning much easier.
Open the free Load a Luton Van Calculator and build your load room by room.
What does the Luton load calculator do?
The calculator contains more than 1,000 common household-item and size options. Search for sofas, beds, wardrobes, appliances, garden equipment, garage items, office furniture and moving boxes, then add the correct quantity to your inventory.
Estimates packed cubic volume rather than using floor area alone.
Allows for stackable items, dismantled furniture and awkward shapes.
Tracks estimated payload weight separately from available space.
Automatically moves to Van 2, Van 3 and further vehicles when the active Luton reaches capacity.
Includes small, medium, large and extra-large moving boxes in every room category.
Lets you save the inventory on your device, share a summary, print a plan or download the list.
Who can use the calculator?
The Plan My Own Move mode is free to use and does not require an OnRoad booking. It can help people hiring a self-drive van, borrowing a vehicle, comparing van sizes, planning storage, organising a house clearance or producing an inventory for another removal company.
Van-hire companies, storage providers, estate agents and removal professionals can also use the tool while discussing a customer’s likely load. A branded business version is available to discuss with OnRoad separately.
What Luton capacity does it use?
The planning model uses approximately 700 cubic feet of packed load space and a 1,200kg payload per Luton. Space and weight are calculated independently because a van may reach its weight limit before it is physically full, or fill with lightweight bulky furniture before reaching the payload limit.
Actual Luton bodies and legal payloads vary. The vehicle’s own plate, exact measurements, safe weight distribution and loading conditions always take priority over an online estimate.
How to build a more accurate moving inventory
Work through every room tab rather than adding only the largest furniture.
Include the loft, garage, shed, garden, hallway and items already stored in boxes.
Choose realistic quantities of small, medium, large and extra-large moving boxes.
Add pianos, safes, machinery and unusually heavy or fragile items exactly as they are.
Use the custom-item option when an object is not listed, using approximate volume and weight.
Leave a practical safety margin for blankets, straps, imperfect stacking and access limitations.
Can it estimate the cost of an OnRoad move?
Yes. Switch to Get OnRoad to Move It after completing the inventory. Enter the collection and delivery postcodes, access details, packing requirements and dismantling work. The premium estimator uses the load, number of vehicles, recommended crew, road distance, estimated travel time and declared extras to produce a guide range.
The online figure is not the final binding quote. OnRoad checks photographs or a walkthrough video, access, parking and specialist items before confirming the fixed price and booking the date.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Luton move a one or two-bedroom property?
Often, but property size alone is not reliable. A lightly furnished two-bedroom property may fit more easily than a heavily furnished one-bedroom flat. Building the actual inventory provides a more useful estimate.
Does it guarantee that everything will fit?
No. It is a planning tool. Real loading depends on exact dimensions, how safely items can be stacked, furniture protection, access and the experience of the loading team.
Can I use it for storage planning?
Yes. The total packed cubic volume can help when discussing storage requirements, although storage units have different shapes and access restrictions, so the final unit size should be confirmed with the provider.
